An Forecasting Platform User Earned $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
